A TWIST IN THE FINAL DAY AS FARLEIGH HOSTS PGA ASSISTANTS’ CHAMPIONSHIP
Farrier-Twist won the event in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to force a play-off against his vastly experienced opponent, who led the tournament throughout after breaking the course record with a nine-under-par (63) round on day one. The 29-year-old from Sedlescombe Golf Club in Sussex produced the round of his life to equal the previous course record of eight-under-par (64) which Ferrie broke days earlier, coming up with two eagles and a birdie on the second play-off hole to take the title. Ferrie still shot an impressive three-under-par round of 69 for a 54-hole total of 15-under, which should have -been sufficient to take the £5k prize if it wasn’t for the heroics of Farrier-Twist in the final round. The event was held at Farleigh, a 27-hole course in Surrey designed by Ryder Cup legend John Jacobs, for the second time in four years. The club cemented its standing as a prime venue for professional tournaments when it was selected to host several PGA qualifying events, as well as the PGA Fourball Championship for two years on the trot. Set within 350 acres of picturesque countryside in the North Surrey Downs, the venue’s surroundings and course conditions were a big hit among the 130-strong field of professionals competing. James Ibbetson, Farleigh’s general manager, said: “It was fantastic to host an event of this magnitude again at Farleigh. It seems to be the year of play-offs and drama at competitions hosted here, as our club championships also went to one. What are the chances! “There was some fantastic golf on display and who better to break the Farleigh course record than Ferrie – to have that calibre of player competing on our course was a real honour. “The course was kept in great condition, as always, thanks to our excellent greenkeeping team, and we were delighted to hear such positive feedback from the players and tournament officials. We would also like to thank the team of volunteers, which comprised of around 10 Farleigh members each day, whose enthusiasm, professionalism and hard work allowed the event to run smoothly and successfully.” For full scoring from the event, visit: https://pgagbi.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/pgagbi21/event/pgagbi21356/contest/1/leaderboard.htm www.farleighfox.co.uk ENDS Written and distributed on behalf of Farleigh Golf Club by Azalea.
